UConcussion Fellowship Program

The UConcussion Fellowship Program, launched in 2022 and made possible by the generous annual donation of the Winberg and Pollack Family Foundation, offers students with real-time experience working alongside a multidisciplinary team of experts in concussion management. Fellows participate in maintaining a longstanding concussion injury surveillance system, managing clinical research, and working in the community to educate youths and athletes in high school and college about sports safety.

Please congratulate our latest and prior fellows:

Current Fellows

Tommy Kim - 2024-2025

Hyuk (Tommy) Kim comes to us from Philadelphia, PA, and is a graduate of the University of Miami with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology and a master's degree in Applied Physiology. During his studies, he was part of clinical research in the Max Orovitz Lab and the Laboratory of Clinical and Applied Physiology.

As the program’s current fellow, Tommy updates and maintains Concussion Injury Surveillance data for concussed athletes via Miami-Dade County public high schools and UHealth Concussion Clinic. He also assists with research and volunteer coordination.

Past Fellows

Luke O'Neil - 2023-2024

Luke initially began as a research assistant at the KiDZ Neuroscience Center, contributing to the WalkSafe and BikeSafe programs. He then transitioned into our fellowship and began handling the data management program for UConcussion.

As the program's second fellow, Luke streamlined the UChart patient intake process and expedited research workflow. In addition, Luke designed the 3D Road Playset for WalkSafe and BikeSafe to educate young children about safe streets, leading to the creation of the BikeSafe STEM program. Luke also featured as Dr. Hotz's first guest on the Hotz Spot podcast.

Luke is currently pursuing a career in the tech industry, with a focus on programming and problem solving.

Jacob Griffin - 2022-2023

Jacob is a graduate of John Hopkins University Bloomberg School and was accepted into the University of Miami medical school after his fellowship here at UConcussion. He was able to create and streamline the Concussion Injury Surveillance System and developed and submitted for publication papers relating to ten years of data for the Countywide Concussion Care Program.

We hope to see Jacob rise to great success in our University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
